Braai was born long before it was software.

I am Rob Weidner, and I spent seven years living in South Africa. What stayed with me most was not just the landscapes or the pace of life, but the culture around the fire.

A braai was never just about cooking. It was welcoming. Old friends and new friends gathered without pretense. Everyone felt comfortable and included, and somehow there was always great food. The cooking itself was simple and almost primitive. Live fire, usually wood, basic grates, nothing fancy. And yet the food always delivered.

Most South Africans grow up with braais. By the time they host their first one, it feels instinctive. Whether five people or fifty showed up, the braaimaster was never stressed. There was a rhythm to it. A pace. They just knew what needed to go on first and what could wait. No panic. No overthinking.

That experience stayed with me.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, where my dad grilled nearly every Sunday. Those are some of my favorite memories. He took pride in it. He went to the butcher, asked questions, bought the best cuts he could, and came home ready to deliver. Between him and my mom, Sunday supper was a real event.

But I also remember the struggle. Coordinating timing. Worrying about whether something was overcooked or underdone. Even when he followed everything the butcher told him, it did not always land perfectly. Looking back, he could have used a braaimaster by his side.

Years later, my dad upgraded to a pellet grill, temperature probes, and all the modern tools. His confidence grew. But the real turning point for me came on Thanksgiving 2024, when we decided to smoke a turkey and I offered to help.

We had data everywhere. Thermometer apps. Smoker controls on another app. Charts, numbers, alerts. But none of it answered the most important questions. Should we raise or lower the temperature? Were we on track to serve at four pm? Would the turkey have enough time to rest without overshooting?

So I opened my laptop and built a Thanksgiving turkey temperature tracker.

I had been working in Airtable for nearly a decade at that point, building systems for clients and consulting professionally. This was just for fun. A way to solve a real problem in real time. I had no idea it would turn into Braai a year later.

At the time, my wife Cassidy and I were moving often. We lived in Houston, then moved to Austin, surrounded by some of the best barbecue in the country. Cooking at home felt optional. But something in me knew I would eventually go all in.

Thanksgiving 2025 sealed it.

We were hosting Thanksgiving for the first time in our new home in Austin. Exciting. Except we did not own a grill. I went straight to Facebook Marketplace and found a twenty dollar Weber Smokey Joe, utensils included, plus a bag of charcoal.

That budget grill quickly became a science experiment.

I drilled a hole in the kettle. Mounted a fan controller to manage internal temperature. Tested wired and wireless thermometers. Built dashboards. Tuned airflow. Suddenly this simple grill was turning into something much smarter.

Thanksgiving day arrived. A tablet mounted outside. The kettle doing its work. Every thirty minutes I logged internal temperatures into Airtable. I layered in Airtable's new AI agent fields and gave it a prompt with one goal. Get dinner on the table at the right time, properly rested, perfectly cooked.

It caught that we were running too hot too early. We choked it down, slowed the cook, and avoided overshooting. For roughly one hundred fifty dollars, it worked shockingly well. But it was messy. Three apps running. Clunky interfaces. Constant context switching.

Still, it was magical.

As a bonus, I was able to watch my dad smoke his turkey from afar and warn him that he was also running hot too early. That moment mattered more than I expected.

That was the spark.

I searched for an app that could do everything in one place. Planning. Timing. Temperature awareness. Guidance. Coaching. It did not exist. The closest thing was building structured ChatGPT cooking projects, treating each cook as a conversation. I loved the coaching. I loved the guidance. But it lacked true interactivity.

I wanted reminders. Automatic check ins. Direct thermometer integration. I wanted the system to know what was happening without me constantly telling it. I wanted to focus on strategy and trust that the rest was handled.

Braai is the result.

It is something I built first for myself, then for my family, and now for anyone who wants more confidence around the fire. Consider it an extension of my own home into the barbecue world.
